Cemetery Walk 2009
The Corydon Old Settlers Cemetery Walk on the evening of Friday Aug 7, 2009 was a great success.
The evening was windy but pleasant as many people came out to Corydon Cemetery to learn about the lives of some early citizens of Wayne County.
Glenn Williamson portrayed W.P. (Pat) Allred.
Allred was a Civil War veteran who later served two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives and in 1917 or 1918 organized the Corydon Fife and Drum Corps - an important part of Corydon's Old Settlers Celebration for many years.
Moriah Morgan portrayed Marguerite Brubaker.
Born in France she met Dr. Carl Brubaker while assisting the Red Cross during World War 1. They married and came to Iowa where he practiced medicine until 1959. Moriah surprised her audience when she spoke with a heavy French accent.
Lacie Sharp portrayed Ethel Miles, a young girl who died of typhoid fever at the age of 14 in 1895.
Her father, Ben, was a partner in Miles Brothers Store, a mercantile operating on the Corydon Square between 1884-1928. He was born in the Log Cabin that can be seen at Prarie Trails Museum.
John Martin and Shara Becker portrayed Neil & Iowa Niday.
Neil was an educator, teaching at Normal College in Humeston in late 1880's or early 1890's. He served as Wayne County School Superintendent 1891-1896 and was one of the organizers of the first telephone company in Corydon.
Neil and Iowa were charter memebers of the Corydon Christian Church. The couple later built a home west of Seymour, where they lived for many years.
A crowd listens as Marguerite/Moriah talks of her early years in Corydon.
